The Challenge

This technique was ideal for creating strong, lightweight frames, addressing the very issues that Catchpole needed to solve.

Engineering Excellence with Sifbronze

Catchpole meticulously designed a new duplex type frame using 1″ diameter, 12 gauge mild steel tubing, with a 1½” top tube and a prefabricated steering head. The frame construction was entirely reliant on Sifbronze welding. This method, characterized by its low application temperature, minimized distortion and residual stresses, which are common issues with traditional welding.

The “Fly Squirrel” engine, known for its simplicity and flexibility, was seamlessly integrated into the new frame. The engine could be easily adapted from 596 c.c. to 498 c.c., providing versatility. Key components, such as welded-on metal tabs and rear fork ends made from shaped ¼” mild steel plates, were also incorporated using Sifbronze welding, enhancing the structural integrity of the motorcycle.

Performance and Legacy

The result was a motorcycle that not only retained its vintage charm but also boasted significantly improved performance. The Sifbronze welded frame was exceptionally lightweight, allowing for rapid acceleration and impressive handling. With a total weight of only 298 lbs. and a 53½” wheelbase, the “J.C. Scott Special” excelled in trials, grass-track meetings, and road races.

John Catchpole’s success with the revamped motorcycle was evident. He competed in numerous events, achieving notable victories and earning the title of 1949 Southern Expert in the sidecar class. The motorcycle’s performance in steep climbs, high-speed road-holding, and mechanical reliability showcased the transformative impact of Sifbronze welding.
