Why should you clean and passivate stainless steel welds?

Welding leaves a heat tint on the surface of stainless, and that tint is exactly where corrosion starts — so it has to come off. But removing it isn't enough on its own: passivating restores the chromium oxide layer, and that's what stops the weld rusting again.

One of the first questions I got is why you should clean and passivate the stainless steel welds. Straight after the welding, a heat tint will appear on the surface. That's exactly where the corrosion will happen if you don't remove them.

Just by removing them, it's not enough. You need to passivate them. Passivating actually restores the chromium oxide layer, so your weld is clean and passivated, meaning it will not rust again.
