What tungsten should I use for TIG welding?

The right tungsten comes down to the material and the current type. Blue 2% Lanthanated tungsten is the most popular all-round choice because it works well on both AC and DC. Grey Ceriated tungsten is suited to lower-current welding, and White Zirconiated tungsten is the typical pick for AC aluminium work. Whichever you choose, correct preparation — particularly how you grind the tip — has a direct effect on arc stability and weld quality.

What is Lanthanated tungsten?

Lanthanated tungsten contains lanthanum oxide, which improves arc starting, stability and electrode life. It performs well on both AC and DC applications and is widely used for steel, stainless steel and aluminium welding. Blue 2% Lanthanated tungsten has become one of the industry’s most popular choices.

What is Zirconiated tungsten?

Zirconiated tungsten is designed primarily for AC TIG welding of aluminium and magnesium. It resists contamination well and maintains a stable arc at higher currents, so it is commonly selected for demanding aluminium applications requiring high weld quality.

Grey vs gold tungsten — what’s the difference?

Grey (Ceriated) tungsten performs well at lower currents and is suited to DC welding. Gold (Lanthanated) tungsten is a versatile all-round electrode suitable for both AC and DC. Many professional welders now choose Lanthanated tungsten because of its excellent arc starting and durability.

How should a TIG tungsten be sharpened?

For DC TIG welding, grind the tungsten lengthwise to a fine point using a dedicated grinding wheel. Grinding around the circumference can cause an unstable arc. For AC aluminium welding, the tungsten tip may naturally form a small rounded end during use — this is expected.

Why does my tungsten keep contaminating?

Tungsten contamination usually occurs when the electrode touches the weld pool or filler rod. Incorrect gas coverage, poor tungsten preparation or excessive current can also contribute. Regrind contaminated tungsten before continuing, to restore arc stability and weld quality.

Why does my tungsten ball up?

A balled tungsten is normal during AC aluminium welding, but it usually indicates incorrect settings during DC welding. Excessive current or incorrect polarity may also cause the electrode to lose its point.
