Vehicle exhaust extraction captures engine fumes directly at the tailpipe and ducts them safely outside, protecting staff from carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and diesel particulate whenever an engine runs indoors. The right system depends on your vehicle type, how many you handle, your bay layout, and whether vehicles stay put or move under power — tailpipe hose reels suit fixed bays, while overhead rail systems follow vehicles that drive in and out.

Where is vehicle exhaust extraction needed?

Any indoor space where engines are started or run requires exhaust extraction. Typical applications include:

  • Vehicle workshops and garages — diagnostics, servicing and repair where engines idle on the spot.
  • MOT testing bays — emissions testing and brake-roller checks demand running engines in an enclosed bay.
  • Bus, coach and HGV depots — large diesel engines produce high volumes of exhaust in confined maintenance areas.
  • Emergency vehicle stations — fire, ambulance and police stations where vehicles are kept ready and engines are started indoors, often at short notice.
  • Plant, agricultural and military workshops — heavy diesel equipment serviced under cover.

Wherever engines run inside a building, the exhaust has nowhere to disperse and concentrations build quickly. Even brief idling can push airborne contaminants well above safe levels.

Why is engine exhaust a serious health hazard?

Engine exhaust is a complex mixture of harmful gases and particles, and indoors it becomes dangerous fast.

  • Carbon monoxide (CO) is colourless and odourless. It binds to haemoglobin far more readily than oxygen, causing headaches, dizziness, unconsciousness and, at high concentrations, death.
  • Nitrogen oxides (NOx) irritate the airways and aggravate respiratory conditions such as asthma.
  • Diesel particulate — the fine soot in diesel exhaust — penetrates deep into the lungs. Diesel engine exhaust is classified as a carcinogen (Group 1) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, linked to lung cancer with long-term exposure.

Because these contaminants are invisible and CO gives no warning smell, extraction must capture fumes at source before they enter the workshop air. Relying on general ventilation or open doors is not adequate control.

What types of vehicle exhaust extraction systems are available?

Vehicle extraction is a form of local exhaust ventilation (LEV) — capturing the contaminant at the point it is released. The main solutions are:

Tailpipe hose systems with hose reels

A flexible high-temperature hose connects to the tailpipe via a nozzle and runs back to a reel mounted on the wall or ceiling. Spring-recoil reels retract the hose automatically when released; motorised reels raise and lower the hose at the press of a button, useful for longer drops or heavier hoses. Hose reels suit bays where the vehicle stays in one place during work.

Overhead rail and sliding-balancer systems

For vehicles that drive in, are worked on, and drive out — or move along a line — an overhead rail lets the extraction point slide along with the vehicle. A trolley and balancer carry the hose so the operator can follow the tailpipe without disconnecting. Rail systems are common in MOT bays, emergency stations and depots where vehicles enter and leave under their own power.

Drop hoses and fan-driven extraction

A drop hose is a simple overhead hose lowered to the tailpipe, ideal for fixed positions. An extraction fan — wall-, roof- or duct-mounted — provides the airflow that pulls fumes through the hose and discharges them outside. Fan sizing must match the number of connection points and the exhaust volume of the vehicles involved.

Nozzles and rubber tailpipe adaptors

The connection between hose and tailpipe is made with a nozzle or rubber adaptor that clamps or pushes onto the pipe. Adaptors come in different diameters and heat ratings to suit cars, vans, HGVs and twin or angled exhausts. A secure, well-fitted nozzle is essential — a poor seal lets fumes escape into the bay.

How do I choose the right system for my workshop?

Selecting a vehicle exhaust system comes down to a few practical questions:

  • What vehicles do you handle? Cars and vans need lighter hoses and smaller nozzles; HGVs, buses and plant produce far more exhaust and need larger-bore hose and higher airflow.
  • How many bays and connection points? Each simultaneous extraction point adds to the total airflow the fan must deliver.
  • Do vehicles move or stay put? Fixed bays suit hose reels and drop hoses; vehicles that drive through suit rail and sliding-balancer systems.
  • What is your bay layout and ceiling height? This determines reel mounting, rail runs and hose length.
  • Petrol or diesel? Diesel particulate places extra emphasis on effective, well-sealed capture.

What are the COSHH and LEV compliance duties?

Engine exhaust is a substance hazardous to health, so vehicle extraction falls under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations. Employers must assess the risk and provide adequate control — at-source extraction is the recognised control for exhaust fumes.

Because these systems are LEV, they are also subject to thorough examination and testing at least every 14 months under COSHH, commonly called LEV testing.
