What gas should I use for MIG welding?

The correct shielding gas depends on the material being welded.

  • Mild steel — an Argon/CO₂ mixture is the most common choice because it provides good arc stability, low spatter and excellent weld appearance.
  • Pure CO₂ — offers deeper penetration but produces more spatter.
  • Stainless steel — specialist Argon-based gas mixtures are recommended.
  • Aluminium — pure Argon is normally used.

What shielding gas should I use for aluminium MIG welding?

Pure Argon is the most common shielding gas for aluminium MIG welding because it provides a stable arc, good cleaning action and excellent weld appearance.

Can I MIG weld without gas?

Yes, but only by using gasless flux-cored wire. Standard solid MIG wire always requires shielding gas to protect the weld pool from atmospheric contamination.

Gasless MIG welding is useful for outdoor work because it is less affected by wind. However, it generally produces more spatter and slag than gas-shielded MIG welding. For workshop fabrication and high-quality welds, gas-shielded MIG remains the preferred option.
