  7. Test your settings on scrap material and make small adjustments to achieve a smooth, stable arc.

What polarity should I use for MIG welding?

Solid MIG wire with shielding gas should normally be welded using DC Electrode Positive (DCEP), also known as reverse polarity. This provides a stable arc and good penetration.

Gasless flux-cored wires often require DC Electrode Negative (DCEN), although this depends on the manufacturer’s recommendations. Always check the wire specification before changing polarity, as incorrect settings can lead to poor weld quality and excessive spatter.

What are the most common MIG welding mistakes?

The most common MIG welding mistakes are using the wrong wire, the wrong shielding gas, poor machine settings and insufficient material preparation.
