What shielding gas is used for laser welding?

Argon is the most common shielding gas for laser welding because it protects the molten weld pool from oxidation. Nitrogen and helium may also be used depending on the material and application. Correct gas selection improves weld quality and surface finish.

What thickness can a handheld laser welder weld?

Material thickness depends on laser power, material type and joint design. Many modern handheld fibre laser welders can weld thin sheet from under 1 mm up to several millimetres thick in a single pass. Always refer to the manufacturer’s specifications for recommended welding capacities.

Choosing the right consumables

The two consumables that most affect laser weld quality are the filler wire (where used) and the shielding gas. Wire choice follows the joint design and material, while gas choice follows the material and the finish you need — argon for most work, with nitrogen or helium where the application calls for it.
