The correct filler wire depends on the grade of stainless steel you're welding. In most applications, the filler wire should match the parent material to achieve the best corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.
308L is typically used for welding 304 stainless steel, while 316L is designed for 316 stainless steel where greater corrosion resistance is required, particularly in marine and chemical environments.
Choose 316L when welding 316 stainless steel or where improved resistance to chlorides and corrosion is required.
309L is commonly used when joining stainless steel to mild steel or welding dissimilar stainless grades. It also performs well as a buffer layer in some repair applications.
In most cases, yes. Matching the filler wire helps maintain the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of the finished weld. However, there are applications where a different filler wire, such as 309L, is the better choice.
Stainless steel MIG welding normally uses shielding gas mixtures designed specifically for stainless applications to provide good arc stability, penetration and weld appearance.
Heat input, poor shielding gas coverage or inadequate post-weld cleaning can all contribute to weld discolouration and reduced corrosion resistance.
Porosity is often caused by contamination, poor gas coverage, moisture or incorrect welding parameters.
