The correct welding rod depends on whether you're welding pure copper or a copper alloy, the thickness of the material and the mechanical properties required from the finished weld.
Yes. Copper can be successfully welded using oxy-fuel or gas welding equipment when the correct filler rod, flame setting and welding procedure are used.
Start by identifying the parent material, then consider the application, required strength, conductivity and service conditions before selecting the appropriate filler rod.
In many applications, yes. Copper transfers heat very quickly, so preheating thicker sections often helps achieve better fusion and more consistent weld quality.
Lack of fusion is commonly caused by insufficient heat input, inadequate preheating, incorrect flame adjustment or poor joint preparation.
A neutral flame is generally recommended for copper welding as it provides good fusion while minimising oxidation of the parent material.
Gas welding is normally chosen when the parent materials need to be fully fused together. Brazing is often preferred where lower heat input, reduced distortion or joining dissimilar metals is required.
Copper gas welding continues to be used in electrical engineering, specialist fabrication, maintenance, repair work, restoration and industrial manufacturing.
Store welding rods in a clean, dry environment and protect them from moisture, dirt and contamination to maintain consistent welding performance.
