The correct mild steel welding rod depends on the material thickness, the application and the strength required from the finished weld.
Select a welding rod that matches the parent material and choose the correct rod diameter for the thickness of the steel being welded.
The correct rod diameter depends on the material thickness and welding technique. Using the appropriate size helps improve weld quality and control.
A neutral flame is normally recommended for welding mild steel, providing good fusion and reducing the risk of oxidation or carburisation.
Porosity is commonly caused by contaminated parent material, poor flame adjustment, incorrect welding technique or inadequate joint preparation.
Lack of fusion can result from insufficient heat input, incorrect torch angle, poor joint preparation or moving too quickly during welding.
Mild steel gas welding rods are widely used in restoration, agricultural engineering, maintenance, automotive repair, fabrication, education and general engineering.
Store welding rods in a clean, dry environment and protect them from moisture, dirt and contamination to maintain consistent welding performance.
Gas welding provides excellent heat control, requires relatively simple equipment and is particularly suitable for thin materials, repair work and classic vehicle restoration where a softer, more ductile weld is often preferred.
