How to approach any welding buying decision

Every sound purchasing decision starts with the same questions: what material are you welding, by which process, to what thickness, and against which mechanical or standards requirements? Once those are clear, the correct consumable usually follows. The lowest purchase price rarely delivers the lowest production cost — high-quality consumables reduce spatter, rework and downtime, which is where the real savings sit. For coded or critical work, always check the consumable meets the relevant BS EN ISO or AWS standards specified by the welding procedure.

Consider five things before you buy:

  • Parent material and grade — mild steel, stainless (304 or 316), aluminium alloy, or dissimilar metals.
