Is always buying cheap a false economy? It can be. Some products are very similar, but a different name badge might make it twice as expensive, like most other things in life.

But you do have to do some testing sometimes just before committing. So, saving a few pounds on a pallet of wire doesn't mean much if it creates feeding issues, inconsistent weld quality, and extra cleaning. Labour's usually the biggest overlooked cost in any fab shop.

So, anything that keeps the welder welding instead of fixing problems and ultimately getting fed up of doing those kind of tasks is where the real savings are going to be made.
