What is the difference between SG2 and SG3 MIG wire?

SG2 is the standard choice for general fabrication, offering reliable weldability and consistent results. SG3 contains higher levels of manganese and silicon, making it better suited for slightly contaminated steel and applications requiring higher tensile strength. However, SG3 is not always an upgrade — if SG2 meets your requirements, there may be no need to pay extra.

Lots of questions in today. A question that comes up all the time. So they're both mild steel MIG wires, but they're designed for slightly different applications.
SG2 is a go-to choice for general fab shops. It works well on clean metal and day-to-day welding, and it gives great weldability and consistent results. SG3 can be a touch more expensive because it's got higher levels of manganese and silicon in it, which makes it a better option if you're welding steel with, say, minor surface contamination.
It will produce a weld with higher tensile strength as well, so it's often chosen where greater mechanical properties are required. But don't always assume SG3 is simply an upgrade on SG2. If SG2 is meeting your specifications and doing everything that you need it to do, it's not always worth spending the extra little bit of money on SG3 because it is more expensive.
